Track Talk: What’s new in 2019

It’s a “new year” in more ways than one for the Legistics racing team. New car. New class. New sponsors. New drivers. Not to mention exciting new developments in our Racing to End Alzheimer’s fundraising campaign.


New car: The #23 Speed Syndicate Audi RS3 LMS (TCR class), sponsored by Legistics, Racing to End Alzheimers, FastMD, FEL and Expo Systems. New tactics: For the first time this year, Racing to End Alzheimer’s honorees will be featured on the car’s livery throughout the season.

Race 1: Daytona

Building on the momentum from last year’s winning season, the Legistics/Racing to End Alzheimer’s racing team (with new co-sponsors FastMD, FEL and Expo Systems) was raring to go at the start of the first race of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series on January 25th at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida.

A late entry to the field, the #23 Speed Syndicate Audi RS3 LMS was something of a wild card with its freshly assembled drivers and crew. Driver (and orthopedic surgeon) Jay Salinsky – in the first of two races he’ll helm this season – started things off with a clean qualifying run and handed the car off to veteran driver Nick Galante 45 minutes into the race. Tearing out of the pits, Galante put his head down and outmaneuvered the rest of the TCR class to take the lead, battling the #37 Honda of Shelby Blackstock through every scorching turn of the track.

The switch to co-driver James Vance of Toronto, Canada, came at the halfway point in the four-hour race. Exiting the pits in 6th place, Vance worked his way back into the lead with just 14 minutes remaining on the clock. In a race heavy with yellow flag caution periods, the final caution to remove a disabled car proved to be one too many. On the restart, the #23 Audi faced relentless pressure from the #37 and #73 Hondas, ultimately crossing the line in third for a hard-earned podium finish.

New team: Drivers Nick Galante, James Vance and Jay Salinsky earned a spot on the podium in their first race together at Daytona Speedway.

Saving the best for last

ATLANTA, GEORGIA — It was the final race of the season: the grueling Motul Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta. Driver Nick Galante set the tone and the pace, grabbing the ST Class pole position — the team’s ninth this season — his BMW proudly sporting its Racing to End Alzheimer’s livery covered with 126 names of Alzheimer’s victims being honored by their friends and family.

From the start, the No.81 led the pack and maintained the lead for most of the race. “It was a good opening stint,” said Galante. “Right at the start, I was getting pressure from Max Faulkner in the Bodymotion car. He put a great outside pass into Turn 1 and blew by me for the lead, but I found a good opportunity a couple laps later on the restart after a caution. We got him going into Turn 10 and repassed him…”


Galante maintained the lead for most of the stint, then pitted for a driver change at Lap 28. Devin Jones strapped in for the second half. Said Jones, “We were in a great position, just like we’ve been in almost every race this year. Nick kept it up front and kept it clean.”

Cautions fell at tricky times for the team, and it was tough spacing for them. Even so, either Galante or Jones held the lead for an incredible 60 of the 71 laps.

Running on empty

Painfully, calculations revealed that the car was about 10 minutes short of fuel. “I can save fuel,” Jones clarified, “but I can’t quite save 10 minutes. We went from saving to just going for it, and hoped some other guys would run out, too.” Holding onto the lead with just over 6 minutes left in the race, Jones had to do a quick fuel stop for a splash-and-go. And, unfortunately, the stop wasn’t quite quick enough. Two other cars managed to sneak ahead.

In third place, back by only 0.686 second, Jones roared to a podium finish. And that was enough to clinch the Season Championship for the No.81 Bimmerworld/Veristor/Legistics/YouRulz BMW 328i.

According to Devin Jones, “This team has come together really well. It’s been a pleasure to drive with Nick and race this car. It’s been just an incredible season.”

He adds, “I have to thank the Racing to End Alzheimer’s campaign. It’s been a big deal. We had the names on the car again at Road Atlanta, with even more added since the Laguna race.”

A championship season

Nick Galante had this to say: “I want to thank Phil Frengs from Legistics who created the Racing to End Alzheimer’s Foundation, the guys at Veristor, who have been with us all season, and everyone at BimmerWorld – James Clay, Tyler Cooke, the whole entire team — Trent Brown, Wayne Yawn, Jason Marks, Dave Simpkins. The entire team is amazing.”

We want to add our own gratitude to the 126 generous donors who honored their loved ones and who helped raise over $100,000 to fund the care and the cure for this terrible disease that affects millions of families.


A Race to Remember

WEATHERTECH RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA, CA — When the BimmerWorld Racing team’s #81 BMW took to the track at the legendary WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca this past weekend, it was immediately obvious that something special was going on.

In place of the names of the team’s corporate sponsors, the car was covered with the donor-sponsored names of individuals whose lives have been adversely affected by Alzheimer’s disease. This moving tribute was the culmination of a season-long campaign to raise awareness and funds for the non-profit Racing to End Alzheimer’s foundation. With generous matching funds from the organization’s founders, over $100,000 was raised in 2018, with 100% of the proceeds earmarked for critical Alzheimer’s research and care.

High stakes

The penultimate race of the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge had a lot riding on it. In addition to the high-visibility Racing to End Alzheimer’s tribute, the race was also a homecoming of sorts for driver Nick Galante – a return to the track where his racing career began. And with only two races left in the hard-fought season, every team on the track was feeling the pressure to turn in a peak performance.

The day started out auspiciously for the #81 Veristor/Legistics/ Racing to End Alzheimer’s team. Nick Galante qualified at the top of the ST class to start the two-hour race in the enviable pole position. With 36 cars battling for dominance on the iconic 2.238 mile, 11-turn course, Galante’s hold on the lead only lasted until turn 2, when he was forced off track to avoid a pair of TCR class cars that collided in his path. Reentering the race in 5th position, Galante kept a cool head and regained the lead before pitting on lap 27 for tires, fuel and a driver change.


High drama

Having pitted before the hallway point to take advantage of a caution, the team had to balance the need for speed with the threat of running out of fuel before the end of the race. With Devin Jones driving and Trent Brown managing strategy from the pit, the #81 was up to the challenge. Jones battled all comers, finessed his way back into the lead and held on all the way to the checkered flag for a deeply meaningful and memorable BimmerWorld team victory.

Devin Jones: “It was a really wild race. Nick did a great job in the opening stint, keeping our position. I started the stint about four minutes down on fuel, so it was nerve-racking right down to the end. I didn’t know if we were going to make it, but I’m just really happy it worked out, especially for ‘Racing to End Alzheimer’s” and all the names on the car. It’s just really special to win here and especially in Nick’s hometown. This is a big deal for us.”

Team Bimmerworld holds the lead in ST class points with only one race remaining in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. The finale for the 2018 season will be the Fox Factory 120 at Road Atlanta on Friday, October 12.

Keeping ‘em guessing

BISCUITVILLE GRAND PRIX, ALTON, VIRGINIA — Thanks to a home track advantage and a healthy lead in the season’s points standings, Virginia based BimmerWorld Racing entered this past weekend’s Biscuitville Grand Prix at VIRginia International Raceway with high expectations. The #81 BMW 381i sponsored by Legistics, Veristor and Racing to End Alzheimer’s got off to a blazing start, capturing the pole for the seventh time in eight IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge races.

The team’s prospects looked bright, but storm clouds were (literally) gathering on the horizon. The track was wet at the start, and the skies opened up shortly after lap 4 of the two-hour, 59-lap race. By the fifth lap of the 17-turn circuit, it was raining heavily, and many of the competitors opted to pit for rain tires.

Betting on sunshine

BimmerWorld decided to stay on the track, betting that the rain would eventually subside – and that driver Nick Galante would be able to manage the slippery track conditions on dry-weather tires. The bet paid off. By lap 11, the sun was peeking back through the clouds, and Galante was leading the ST class.

Nick Galante: It was a mayhem of a start with the TCR cars and some of the GS cars dropping back. So, we were actually battling two different classes and a championship at the same time within our own class, which was quite interesting. Jason Rabe drove really well, and we had a great battle back and forth. Collin Mullin had a great start and passed me at the start. We had contact at the exit of turn three, unfortunately. It was unintentional on both sides and it was just good, hard racing. We actually broke our window and had some glass in the car that was affecting our throttle pedal. The car’s pretty good on rain tires in the wet, but on slicks it was a handful.

Betting on rain

Galante pitted on lap 30, and the team elected to switch to rain tires in the midst of another downpour. This time, the gamble didn’t go their way. On lap 45, with 25 minutes left in the race, the track began to dry up, the rain tires began to disintegrate, and driver Devin Jones was forced to pit for a tire change during green-flag conditions.

Devin Jones: When I got in the car, we put on rains [tires], kind of gambling that the rain was going to keep steady. It was working for the first few laps, but then it started to taper off, and the track dried. Then the rain tires started coming apart and started getting really hot, and then one of them went flat. We had a left front flat, so we had to come in and put dries on. We lost a bunch of time there, but we were able to knock off some good laps. We were running everyone down and just kind of ran out of time, honestly. We were probably the fastest time at the end there, but everybody rallied really well. It’s just one of these races where it can fall either way. Rain races are tricky, especially when it’s off and on like that.


It ain’t over ‘til it’s over

Jones crossed the finish line in fourth place. But the day’s surprises weren’t over. The first-place finishers received a post-race technical infraction, the third-place team was assessed a drive-time infraction – and the #81 wound up with second-place honors (and the points to match) at the end of another wildly unpredictable weekend of racing.

The penultimate round for the 2018 IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge season will be held at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on September 8, followed by the finale at Road Atlanta on October 12.
